Perils of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Next stop along the road is a town called Kumily, located right outside the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
We stayed in a cute little bamboo hut at the Coffee Inn, where there was a view over into the sanctuary.
We saw many interesting birds, including a hornbill, as well as some Indian Bison, Wild Pigs and the local cows.

Our first night in the bamboo hut we had a visitor. It was a very strange little creature that at first glance we thought was a tiny lizard, but this theory was quickly disregarded as it flew up into our faces as we looked closer.
We weren't too enthused about having this guy crawling around our bed so we caught him in a glass, and managed to snap a few photos...

unfortunately he didn't survive the night...

The next day we decided to explore the sanctuary. We paired up with some Iraqi fellows we met and went for a guided early morning trek in the park.

We saw spectacular views in the park along with huge trees and interesting plants and fungi.

exploring the jungle...

This little guy was stuffing his cheeks with some dry roasted chickpeas that someone dropped.

A cafe disguised as a turtle.

Another macaque swinging on a tree.

Way up in this tree is a black monkey called the Nilgiri Langur.

This is a Banyan Tree, similar to a strangler fig, it grows around a host tree, which is eventually killed as the Banyan takes over...and its fun to climb on.
