Annapurna Sanctuary Trek: Part 6 - Annapurna Base Camp

We woke up at 4am to begin our 400m ascent to Annapurna Base Camp (A.B.C.) (4130m). It was freezing cold and almost pitch black. By the light of our headlamps we walked for about an hour under starry skies. Soon the sun began to rise, revealing the magnificent array of snowy peaks that surrounded us.

We approached A.B.C. just before 6am. I cannot describe the joy I felt as the mountain tops began to glow pink in the first rays of the rising sun.

Annapurna South loomed before us. (The base camp itself can be seen at the bottom left)

Annapurna I (8019m), the 10th tallest mountain in the world, and considered the most difficult to climb.

The South Annapurna Glacier, carving a wide path through the valley.

Huin Chuli mountain.

High altitude volley ball!

Chelsea in front of Tent peak, with Gangapurna in the background. The last time we saw this mountain was from Manang on the opposite side.

Macchapucchre in all its glory.

Some small alpine plants, stubbornly surviving the freezing temperatures.

What a magical experience!
