Around the "Old" Bhopal City

The city of Bhopal was an interesting place to explore. It is a city divided, on one side of the two large lakes is New Bhopal, that has wide paved streets, a number of large houses and nice neighborhoods with only a few slums dotted in between, and on the other side is Old Bhopal, which is far less affluent, the roads are filled with potholes and there is a much larger quantity of trash everywhere. Both the Union Carbide factory and the Sambhavna clinic are located in the heart of Old Bhopal.

Here are some shots taken in the area surrounding the clinic...

We just loved this 'Total Control' sign.

Notice the person sleeping in the background...

All the vacant lots were turned into trash heaps.

Someone's 'speed racer' truck, with the door missing.

The famed river of trash, located just a few hundred feet from the clinic.

I just loved this guy's smile.

These guys are making some kind of fluorescent orange deep fried delight.

This guy was either suicidal or trying to give Frank a high-five.

The Taj al-Masjid, one of the largest mosques in Asia.

This shows one of the lakes that separates old and new Bhopal.

We visited the home of Manmohan, one of the gardeners at Samhavna, we drank some chai and met his family.
