Heavenly Hampi

We went to Hampi with no idea what to expect, all we had heard was that this place was a backpackers paradise and that you should stay on the 'other' side of the river. So we arrived, bleary eyed, after a night on a bumpy sleeper bus and were amazed at the beauty of the landscape.

Famous for it's rock formations, Hampi is a relaxing place to stay for a few days or weeks, exploring the  rocky and alien landscape with its vast number of ancient ruins.

We stayed at Manju's Place, a little hut community, completely surrounded by rice paddies. With beautiful views, ample chilling spots and good food, Manju's was a little slice of paradise.

Here is a Hanuman Langur that wandered into our hotel one morning and began stealing bananas. Legend says that the rock formations of Hampi were formed thousands of years ago when Hanuman the monkey god and his monkey army fought demons here by throwing huge boulders at them.

These rock formations were just a quick walk from Manju's Place.

This lake provides Hampi with the water to irrigate the endless paddy fields.

These are ruins of an ancient royal city are just across the river from Manju's place.

An elephant stable.

An ancient marketplace.

A stone chariot. (definitely not functional!)
