Bhopal's New Market

New Market is the commercial center of New Bhopal. During our time in Bhopal we visited New Market on several occasions. From brightly coloured clothes to plastic flowers to fresh fruits to unrecognisable Indian delights; anything you want can be found here for "best price!". One of our first stops was this ayurvedic pharmacy where we bought "dant manjan", a kind of powder that works as an herbal toothpaste.

The market consists of a maze of small pedestrian-only streets lined with shops.

To avoid getting lost, it helps to keep track of where you are relative to the large hindu temple at the edge of the market.

The friendly neighbourhood Sadhu.

The sweet shop. This place served warm, freshly fried Indian sweets like gulab jamun (honey-filled dough balls) and Jangiri (sweet orange deep fried pastries in the shape of a coil). Notice the guy squeezing the jangiri dough into coils and frying them.

This is the government authorized "bhang" shop, where you can buy freshly squeezed grape juice infused with these little green balls, which contain some type of edible cannabis product.

A wonderfully colourful display of bright red chillis!

An adorable stray puppy wondering around the market.

This is Shahabaz the world's fastest omelette flipper! (no seriously!). We watched him flip an omelette over 100 times in a minute, and it tasted great too!

This is the 'paan' shop, and on display here is 'sweet' paan, also known as 'women's' paan. It doesn't contain the typical betal nut and tobacco preparation that most locals chew, instead it contains some dried fruit, coconut, saffron and maraschino cherries, all wrapped in an edible leaf.

It was tasty!
